Grilled halibut for dinner
by brian @ 20:27:16 - [perma-link]I fired up the grill for the first time in forever. Apparently I dropped something in last time because there was LOTS of smoke. Anyway, cooking a big hunk of halibut marinated in something. Daisy is out here with me watching the airplanes fly over. Thick fish... Cooking pretty hot. I can hear it sizzling. Can't wait to eat it. |

(De)Construction continues
by brian @ 21:38:59 - [perma-link]More work inside the house today. The new master bath is taking shape. They knocked out the door for the the new toilet room, which will be just outside the current bathroom. The shot from outside shows it a little better. That patio will be enclosed to become a sunroom as part of the Master Suite (lol). The wall is opened up into the former spare-bedroom closet which will become our gigantic shower. Rock. Downstairs they began pulling stuff out of the bathroom. The floor in the downstairs bath is asbestos. I'm guessing the specialists will be here soon to finish the job. On the construction side, they're finishing up on the section between the garage and the house. Windows are in the breezeway. Its almost fully enclosed now. |

Its coming from inside the house!!!
by brian @ 19:15:53 - [perma-link]The pounding hammers are no longer just outside. Today the contractors masked off the interior and started demolition on the master bathroom. Apparently this is the part of remodelling we were warned about. When all the work is outside, we don't really notice it. Now we'll wake up at 8am with workers in the house. But its ONLY for 3 months. Or so. ;) |

I don't know what to say
by brian @ 13:23:53 - [perma-link]I thought the Aztec was ugly. Then Honda made the Element, targetted at cool twenty-somethings who wouldn't be caught dead in such a hideous car. Then someone did this two tone job. Make it stop! |

Wall of Spices
by brian @ 14:06:27 - [perma-link]I was gonna make a Dune reference, but can't recall it well enough. We're getting lattes at the coffee shop near the post office. They have good coffee and a big wall of spices in gallon jars. |

Giving road rage a bad name
by brian @ 14:34:45 - [perma-link]This guy in the 4 runner was a few cars behind us on a 2 lane stretch of I5 south. We were in a long line of cars slowly passing the long line of trucks in the right lane. At every opportunity, he would pop out to the right, accellerate to right behind the next truck, and hit the brakes. Then pop back in where he came from. Every few tries he would move up a spot in line by cutting someone off. And as the right lane cleared up, the car between us would move over and let us by, putting us right behind the 4 runner again. All his dangerous maneuvers were accomplishing nada. When it finally opened up to 3 lanes, we blew by him and I snapped this pic. See ya, dumbass. |

BMW Rally
by brian @ 21:52:13 - [perma-link]This weekend we went to the BMW Riders of Oregon rally in John Day, Oregon. I brilliantly forgot my "real" sunglasses, but these seemed somehow appropriate at the place we had breakfast on saturday. We brought Daisy with us, and she slept most of the way. She also met another dog at the rally and got dirty rolling around in the gravel. Camping was fun. We saw some cool BMW bikes. The best one was clearly the black 1958-or-something that had just been restored. And we learned that BMW bike luggage makes a great cooler. This morning we saw the city version of Nikki's country bike. My defender crossed 33,000 miles (not bad for, uh, 6 years ;). We had some great Oregon scenery on the 300 mile drive home (not even CLOSE to 3 hours, but better than the 350 mile route we took to get there ;), and we caught a nice bug collection. Tomorrow I'll clean the car (uh, maybe.. i'm pretty tired) then we head on another 300 mile journey to Connie's sister's. If we come back Tuesday, we'll have 4 300+ mile days in a row! I vote we stay in Crescent City an extra day. |

Wine
by brian @ 22:29:41 - [perma-link]I think its impossible to talk about wine without sounding pretentious. For example, this weekend we went camping. We brought along 6 bottles of wine. red wine doesn't need to be chilled, so we didn't have to ice it like we would if we had brought beer. We had two bottles of Stag's Leap and 4 bottles of Bonny Doon Cardinal Zin. The couple in the tent next door came by and we offered them some wine. They liked it, so we told them it was the Cardinal Zin. Its from the Bonny Doon winery in Santa Cruz, its good, and it has funny labels. The Cardinal Zin has a funny devil-looking guy on it. Their Cigar Volante, a very good $30 bottle of wine, has a picture of a UFO flying over a vinyard, and on the back explains how some region of France, if I recall, made a law declaring that no UFOs may fly over their fields, as it could affect the grapes. When we finished that bottle, they offered a bottle they had brought. He defensively said it was his friend who bought it and it was cheap. Out came a bottle of Charles Shaw. It sells a Trader Joe's, and it is a pretty good bottle of wine, and a great bottle at the price: $1.99 in CA, and $2.99 in OR. Charles Shaw had some deal to supply the Airlines, or something, and it fell through and all of a sudden they had no money and warehouses full of good wine. He was delighted and surprised and couldn't wait to tell his friend. I mean, come on! How pretentious was that?!?!?! |
