Insulating the Vanagon
by brian @ 09:28:02 - [perma-link]Yesterday I insulated the doors and panels of the Vanagon to keep the
heat out at Burningman. I used two types of insulation. The first is
a shiny mylar bubblewrap, like those folding window screens. I cut
pieces to fit the panels tucked them into the recesses. Behind that I
put a layer of R-13 insulation made from recycled denim. I got it at
ecohaus in Portland. It cuts with
scissors (kinda), but some I just tore by hand. It was way nicer to
work with than the nasty pink fiberglass stuff. The back door, side door and inside panels get both layers. The front
doors only get the foil stuff, since the window needs room to roll
down, but it still should reflect a lot of heat. I'll hang the custom
window shades, and it should be nice inside. The insulation should
also reduce road noise, which will be nice for the long drives I have
ahead of me.
