Fixed my Sidekick
by brian @ 01:13:41 - [perma-link]

While I was in Santa Rosa, my phone stopped getting a signal. After a
while trying to get it replaced through T-Mobile's useless customer
service center (who insisted it was a coverage issue, even though
Connie's phone was getting a strong signal right next to mine), and
after 3 days of not being able to use my phone, I decided to open it up
and see what was wrong.

Nothing new, but the antenna design on this thing is terrible. It is
mechanically held on by 2 solder pads. And there's various tension
working against the pads. The middle pad actually separated from the
GSM modem part. I managed to solder it back on and got it working
again (coverage issue, huh?). The next night it broke again, so I
opened it up, soldered it, tested it, then epoxied (well,
cyano-acrylate anyway) it in place. Its been working great every since.

Bike Night
by brian @ 01:20:23 - [perma-link]

We managed to make it to Bike Night at Duke's this week. There were
some pretty cool bikes, and this killer helmet. Connie's Triumph got a
lot of looks (that's her riding it in the last picture), and the Ducati
confused one guy ("What is this one?" A Ducati. "Oh. Who makes it?
Honda?" No, Ducati. "Oh. What brand is it?" Ducati. Its Italian.
"Oh, you imported it?").

I need to learn to ride, so i don't get stuck on the back of Nikki's
bike again.

Mopar Show
by brian @ 01:30:51 - [perma-link]

Josh and I went to a Mopar show at a local car dealership today. It
was the first of this show, but there were some pretty cool cars.
Everything from stock restorations to fully race modified. Lots of
good ideas for my Charger (parked behind the, uh, Porsche). There was
only one blower-motor, and it was on a truck.

Next year I should have something worth showing.

What's with the chairs?
by brian @ 16:04:36 - [perma-link]

Connie and I drove by here earlier and saw all these chairs. I just
walked by and saw a new vietnamese restaurant (a "contemporary
vietnamese bistro" actually) under construction downtown. And they're
outside varnishing all these, I suppose, "authentic" vietnamese bistro
chairs.

Powerbook case mod: Makitosh
by brian @ 21:38:53 - [perma-link]

A few months ago, Daisy broke my powerbook. Both hinges snapped. I put
it back together with duct tape, then kevlar thread, then duct taped it
to a "podiumpad" thing. But none of that worked.

So this morning, I took a makita cordless drill case (which is way too
big for the drill, and wasn't being used anyway) and cut it out to hold
the halves of my powerbook.

Its a rough hack job, but it works and should last until the next
revision.

More bike pics
by brian @ 23:25:12 - [perma-link]

Since I can't ride yet, I'm spending time fixing up my motorcycle.

I spent a good part of the afternoon polishing up the left-side fin on
the engine. I started doing it by hand, then learned how to use my
random-orbital sander/polisher properly. It's much easier with a power
tool. Both side fins are almost mirror-like. I also polished up the
backs of the mirrors.

The new tires look killer. They're way better than anything anyone
even conceived of when the bike was new. They were also the only ones
at the shop that would fit. The rear tire is about the largest that
will fit in there. The front fender had to come off to fit the front,
but it can go back with some slight modification.

Next order of business: fix that nasty leak.
