My G5 didn't arrive today
by brian @ 14:13:43 - [perma-link]The pile of boxes in my kitchen is not from Apple. They do not contain
my G5.
Apple delayed my shipment sometime yesterday, late afternoon.
Apparently there was some sudden supply issue between noon and 6pm, such
that they tacked on an extra 5 weeks to my estimated shipping date.
Its already been 91 days. I know that, not just because of my l33t math
skillz, but because my order no longer appears on the "Order Status"
page on the Apple store website. I now have to look up the order number
every time I want to check (though I'm sure I'll have it memorized
before too long).
I called Apple this morning, and my new "On Or Before" date of 10/29
means that it could ship sooner, or that on Oct 29, they'll tack on
another extension. It gives me a nice helpless feeling inside.
Thanks, Apple!
(At least they haven't announced a new, improved version yet, like they
did when I was waiting for my tibook. THAT really sucks.) |

My Babies at the B and B in Astoria
by Connie__ @ 23:04:57 - [perma-link]We took a very long walk along the Columbia on Saturday (9/20/03) in Astoria. We are really tired. Especially Daisy. We ended up staying in our room and watching a tiny TV the rest of the day. Something new and different for us ;) |

We're in Astoria
by brian @ 16:41:43 - [perma-link]We decided to get out of the house for the weekend, so we drove out to Astoria. Right now we're taking a break (after a long walk) and watching tv. With commercials!!! Yeah! Commercials totally suck! And there's so many of them. Its like built-in punishment for watching too much TV. |

Bad security
by brian @ 00:45:59 - [perma-link]I shouldn't leave root shells laying around with keyboard focus while the cat is crawling on the keyboard. At least he doesn't know unix... Yet. |

6 days of growth
by Connie__ @ 01:46:35 - [perma-link]My hair is about an 1/8" long now. It's growing fast. Man is it dark. It will be interesting to see my natural color. I can't wait. Although it would be cool to bleach it white for NY. I'll try not to or else I'll just have to shave it again ;) Connie |

Responsible Journalism
by brian @ 12:43:53 - [perma-link]According to this article, Disney is trying to launch a new DVD-like format with crippled disks
that "self-destruct" after 48 hours. Instead of paying $10-20 on a DVD
you can watch over and over, or $3.50 for a 5-day DVD rental, you can
pay $7 and have a shiny Disney drink coaster after a couple of days.
But the really shocking thing about the article is that it doesn't even
MENTION the failed Div-X format. Back when DVDs first came out,
Circuit City teamed up with some of the studios to develop a competing
disc format. It was the same size as a DVD, but included software
protection so it would stop playing after a few days. After that
period, you (or your babysitter, or whoever) could put it back into
your special Div-X player (which could also play real DVDs) which would
call the Div-X service and "buy" it again. After getting a lot of
media attention (mainly negative) it was an enormous failure.
It is completely irresponsible not mention Div-X as precedence in an
article about how EZ-D is destined to fail. DivX failed because people
did not want to buy temporary media. Its as simple as that. EZ-D is
just rehashing the same idea, but with perhaps "better" technology
(better for the studios, not the consumer). Journalism like this only
serves to drag out that failure.
Ugh. I need more coffee. |

FischerSpooner
by brian @ 23:02:30 - [perma-link]Louis "dragged" me to see FischerSpooner. It's not what I was expecting, but then I didn't really know what to expect. Kind of 80s meets techno or something. It's pretty cool. |
