Iron City Beer
by brian @ 16:35:20 - [perma-link]

So, so gross. They should spell "city" with and "sh" instead.

Bear is king of the world
by brian @ 17:10:19 - [perma-link]

He's a little hard to see in this shot, but Bear is perched on the peak
of the neighbor's garage roof. I guess he knows what he's doing, but
getting down should be interesting.

Firing up the boat
by brian @ 14:32:06 - [perma-link]

Under the Bush administration's new EPA policies, all water vehicles are
required to dump at least this much pollutants into the air.

Just kidding. This was the cloud that came out when we first fired up
the boat last week. Its pretty much just fuel stabilizer burning up,
since the boat was practically empty when we winterized it. The smoke
stopped pouring out after a few seconds, and spread out over the water
like "creature from the black lagoon" special effects until it
eventually dispersed.

When we started it up with clean gas on Sunday there was nothing
visible.

HDTV is so retro
by brian @ 22:23:01 - [perma-link]

I'm watching "Medium" in HD through that fancy rabbit ears antenna. I
can pick up all of the networks through that antenna, but I have to get
up and move it around when I change channels.

We can't get the "local" HD feeds via DirectTV (though we do get the
standard def channels) because of some stupid anti-competitive law or
contract or something. So I have to deal with this anachronistic
insanity instead.

Anyway...NBC works with the antenna moved to the left and turned a
little. Fox and ABC come in with it about centered and straight, but I
have to flip a switch and spread the ears a bit. I can pick up CBS by
moving it all the way to the right side of the TV and changing the
amplifier switch on the back.

2 steps forward, one step back. But it is kind of cool that the picture
looks this good over the air.

New suspension
by brian @ 12:33:17 - [perma-link]

The old suspension was a big rubber bumper as a spring. The new is a
spring. And adjustable.

One down, 3 to go.

Slammed!
by brian @ 19:25:51 - [perma-link]

We got all 4 new springs on (the fronts were NOT the easy part), and
dropped it down low. We'll adjust it for real later, once we grease the
adjusters at home.

So... New shocks a few weeks ago. Now new springs, stage 1 exhaust (the
old mufflers are really shot), and a K&N air filter. Should be a fun
drive home.

Niko's Birthday
by brian @ 19:33:10 - [perma-link]

Nikolaus turned 5 a couple of days ago, so we all went out to dinner.
He brought his Gameboy (a birthday present from his parents) and played
it through most of the meal. He did put it down long enough to blow
out all of the candles.

Walk small and carry a big stick
by brian @ 08:40:02 - [perma-link]

Buster picked up this stick on our walk the other day and carried it all
the way home.

Daisy and Buster were at daycare today. I guess Oscar missed them.

Hotel key-card poison
by brian @ 17:31:59 - [perma-link]

The magentic stripe on the hotel key cards (at this hotel, anyway) have
an adverse response to me. Almost every time I've come back to my room
this trip, I've had to make an extra trip downstairs to get a new key,
becuase they stop working.

Last night I left my wallet in the room so I wouldn't have an unsightly
bulge in the back of my tux ;). When my key failed, the front desk
reluctantly gave me a new key, based on an extensive quiz on my personal
information. The tux probably helped, too. Later that night, back in my
"street clothes", I again had a key fail, and the guy gave me a new key,
only after ridiculing me for never having any ID (but the joke is on
him, since now that he knows who I am, I don't really need my ID, do I
sucka!). He gave me 2 keys, just in case.

Just now the guy replacing both of those warned me that they can get
erased if they come "within like a foot of a cell phone." (Good thing
travellers don't tend to carry cell phones, eh?)

Now I'm carrying 4 keys, in different pockets, hoping that one of them
will get me back into my room later. Something in this system is very,
very broken.
