Early Hannukah!
by brian @ 15:03:20 - [perma-link]

I got my plasma cutter today. I can't wait to start cutting up
metal. I need to get some safety gear first, but this is really cool.

Thanks, dogs!

Gutting the Charger
by brian @ 16:59:40 - [perma-link]

Josh and I pulled the seats and carpeting (2 layers!!! Who carpets
over carpet?) out of the Charger over the weekend. The passenger
side looks pretty clean, but the drivers floor has some rust,
hopefully just superficial. Yesterday I stripped the dashboard.
Looks like I missed a piece on the left.

There was a build sheet under the original carpeting, so I looked up
some of the codes online. Aside from the original white vinyl top
and the special-order 2.71 highway gears in the rear end, this car
was basic standard features; nothing worth restoring back to
original. Woohoo!

I like the dash without all the pads on it. I'll have good seatbelts
with shoulder belts, so the extra cushioning isn't as important as it
might have been 36 years ago. With everything removed it will be
easier to locate the computer, LCD screen and new gauges.

New fridge
by brian @ 19:19:14 - [perma-link]

We got a new fridge to put in the basement. Just a small one for extra
room. Just soda in it right now.

The delivery guys had a fun time getting it down the stairs.

The General Lee
by brian @ 23:13:27 - [perma-link]

I knew the chips of orange under the white paint had to be an old
general lee paintjob, but I hadn't expected to see the whole roof in
almost pristine condition. Some surface rust on the passenger side, and
a couple of small holes on the driver side.

Now its tear-down time. Not quite sure what that means, but I'll learn
as I go.

New RC Car
by brian @ 14:06:45 - [perma-link]

I'm a sucker for Fry's Holiday RC Car sales. A few years ago it was a
couple of Hummers, then some of the micro cars. This year its the Nikko
"Pro Class" Murcielago.

Its a 9.6V car with a thin lexan body, so its super light. Its not
T-Maxx fast, but its not T-Maxx priced either. For a $70 (vs hundreds
for a real "pro" car) toy, its plenty fast; fast enough for it to spin
out and drift some turns, but not quite fast enough to break when it
smacks into the curb.

New Table
by brian @ 19:55:57 - [perma-link]

I put the new slot-car table together tonight in the basement. With the
base screwed, glued and bolter tight, its really stable. Even without
the plywood and soundboard on top, it barely shakes. And when the sides
go on, the top will look much nicer.

I still need to do the wiring before I screw down the top; it will be
much easier if I can stand up, and have light instead of having tp crawl
around under the table.

I did a quick test with a layout roughly based on PIR. The table works,
you know, as a table. I don't know that the soundboard does anything
with thew track just sitting on it.

Broken Hard Drive
by brian @ 22:36:50 - [perma-link]

The drive in my old Powerbook started making a ticking sound a while
back. I kept the old one to see if it was recoverable.

Last night I tried it in an external usb case. The disk wouldn't spin,
and something just clicked. The next logical thing to do was open it
up. :)

I didn't find the problem, but now I have 2 really strong refridgerator
magnets and 4 shiny 2.5" platters.
