	Insulating the Vanagon by brian @ 09:28:02 - [perma-link] Yesterday I insulated the doors and panels of the Vanagon to keep the heat out at Burningman. I used two types of insulation. The first is a shiny mylar bubblewrap, like those folding window screens. I cut pieces to fit the panels tucked them into the recesses. Behind that I put a layer of R-13 insulation made from recycled denim. I got it at ecohaus in Portland. It cuts with scissors (kinda), but some I just tore by hand. It was way nicer to work with than the nasty pink fiberglass stuff. The back door, side door and inside panels get both layers. The front doors only get the foil stuff, since the window needs room to roll down, but it still should reflect a lot of heat. I'll hang the custom window shades, and it should be nice inside. The insulation should also reduce road noise, which will be nice for the long drives I have ahead of me.
	Soap Box Derby by brian @ 09:32:28 - [perma-link] A few pictures from the Portland soap box derby at Mt Tabor over the weekend. Optimus Prime (#14) was one of the best. It actually transformed, but it was too far away when it did to get a good picture. My favorite was the surfer, who steered by tilting the surfboard.
